So I’ve seen a lot of people pointing out parallels between the songs used in Season 8 and Season 8 itself but I haven’t yet seen anyone’s attention being drawn to the unusually long shot of the Led Zeppelin album.
Not surprisingly the track list reads like a Season 8 or even Destiel playlist.
The main themes of the album are clear parallels to the main themes we see on the show itself and maybe even foreshadowing:
In the days of my youth, I was told what it means to be a man,
Now I’ve reached that age, I’ve tried to do all those things the best I can.
No matter how I try, I find my way into the same old jam.
Well they call me the hunter, that’s my name.
They call me the hunter, that’s how I got my fame.
Ain’t no need to hide, Ain’t no need to run.
'Cause I've got you in the sights of my……….gun!
Love (together with self-awareness):
Been Dazed and Confused for so long it’s not true.
Wanted a woman, never bargained for you.
I don’t know what it is that I like about you, but I like it a lot.
Won’t let me hold you, Let me feel your lovin’ charms.
Hey, girl, I got something I think you ought to know.
Hey, babe, I wanna tell you that I love you so.
I wanna hold you in my arms, yeah!
I’m never gonna let you go,’Cause I like your charms.
Said you know I love you, baby, my love for you I could never hide.
Oh, when I feel you near me little girl, I know you are my one desire.
When you hear me moaning and groaning,
you know it hurts me deep down inside.
Oh, when you hear me… You know you’re my one desire. Yes, you are.
I don’t care what the neighbors say, I’m gonna love you each and every day.
You can feel the beat within my heart.
Realize, sweet babe, we ain’t ever gonna part.
Loss and what we see and hear in “He’s not answering”:
Try to love you baby, but you push me away.
Don’t know where you’re goin’, only know just where you’ve been,
Sweet little baby, I want you again.
Communication Breakdown, It’s always the same,
I’m having a nervous breakdown, Drive me insane!
It’s fadin’ away, can’t feel you anymore.
Don’t care what you say ‘cause I’m goin’ away to stay,
Gonna make you pay for that great big hole in my heart.
But when I whispered in her ear, I lost another friend, oooh.
EDIT: Hope (and love as we see it when Dean hugs Cas after finding him in Purgatory):
It feels good to have you back again
And I know that one day baby, it’s really gonna grow, yes it is.
We gonna go walkin’ through the park every day.
Come what may, every day
And one that striked me most as a keyword throughout the songs- Home:
I know what it means to be alone, I sure do wish I was at home.
I can hear it callin’ me the way it used to do,
I can hear it callin’ me back home!
You shook me so hard baby, baby, baby, please come home
Said you messed up my happy home, Made me mistreat my only child.
I’ve got to get to you, baby, baby, please come home.
(home is a word featured in two more songs but without a fitting meaning)
So this is my contribution to this whole drawing parallels thing and it’s almost 7am and I haven’t slept yet so you shouldn’t expect this to be very quality or sensible.
But that’s my personal meta’d musical theory.
I know I mentioned Home last but it was what striked me first reading through the lyrics and maybe that’s what makes Dean lay down the album so carefully and made them focus on that so much- it addresses his feelings, reminds him of the home he has now and maybe helps him cope with what might be him starting to become aware of his feelings for Cas and probably helps him come to terms with himself as we can see in his character development.
